What is Your Diet Personality?

Are You a Chocomaniac?  A French Fry?  A Carbo Craver?

Dr. Glenn Livingston, psychologist and CEO of Executive Solutions Inc. has recently completed an extensive study on the relationship between diet, stress, and personality type.  Based on this nationwide 2 year long study which included over 1,500 people, Dr. Livingston concludes that both personality and genetics strongly influence the type of diet that one will do well on:

"That's mostly because both our genetics and our psychology affect the specific types of cravings we experience, and our ability to control ourselves when we get them", he says.

Dr. Livingston says that statistically, people tend to 'cluster' into one of five groups, which he labels 'Chocomaniacs', 'Carbo Cravers', 'French Fries', 'Food for Fun', and 'Food Finesser'.   Each group is distinguished by the foods that they crave.  'Chocomaniacs', for example, crave chocolate and sweets but are reasonably insulated against purely fatty foods (like meats, nuts, or fried chicken).  'French Fries', on the other hand, are people predisposed towards salty-fatty-fried-starchy foods, and 'Food for Fun' diet-types are vulnerable to anything that tastes good!

More importantly however, is that each of these groups has a distinct personality, providing clues as to how they can manage a craving or prevent a binge.  For example, 85% of 'Chocomaniacs' (vs 65% of others) indicated that compassion was more important than objectivity, and highly valued their emotional lives.  Not surprisingly, they report a stronger reduction in stress (and most likely a reduction in cravings) when they simply pause to practice smiling (73% vs 58% of others).  The 'French Fry', on the other hand, is more objective  than compassionate (41.4% vs. 30% of others), tends to eat when they are angry or when they experience time pressure, and feels more stresed if asked to smile.  The French Fry's' alternative to food is cuddling up with a good book.  (In the survey information link below, Dr. Livingston provides a detailed narrative, plus many tables of data to support his theories).

Each of the Diet Personality Types has been given a 'motto' to crystalize their characters:

Chocomaniac: "When the going gets tough, the tough eat chocolate!"

French Fry:  "Yes, I DO want fries with that."

Food for Fun: "I'm bored!  What do you have to eat?"

Food Finesser: "Everyting in Moderation"

Carbo Craver: "Pass the Pasta - But Better Hold the Butter!"

Since the diet personalities are easily predicted by a few short personality and demographic questions, a web site has been built where one can take the Diet Personality Test, and receive a customized analysis for free.  Log onto www.DietTypes.com to do so.
